Experiential Learning Process

Our program uses an experiential learning process which includes the Action Learning Model of plan, do, check/reflect, and act to advance health within a team’s community through an Applied Health Leadership Project (AHLP) of their choosing. The program integrates multiple learning modalities including synchronous and asynchronous learning. All program activities will be enhanced by the teams working together to reflect on their leadership learning. Learn more about our approach.

Applied Health Leadership Project

The Applied Health Leadership Project (AHLP), a population health improvement project, is an experiential learning opportunity for teams to apply their leadership skills. This project is selected by the team to advance the health of their community.

An ideal AHLP takes a new approach to improving population health by engaging non-traditional partners across sectors to create unique solutions to today's major population health challenges. A successful AHLP critically analyzes the situation in the community including the environmental, political, social, and built environment to work towards achieving health equity. Each AHLP should have a clear intervention strategy and defined indicators of success.

Past examples of successful AHLPs include asthma prevention in a low-income urban neighborhood, school-based childhood obesity prevention on a Native American reservation, and emergency preparedness in an area prone to wildfires. Learn more about projects from past teams.

Coaching Support

Each team will be assigned a coach. Coaches are recognized experts in the field of public health, leadership, and community engagement. Coaching support will occur through monthly phone calls and two in-person meetings: the retreat and a site visit.

Coaches use an inquiry-based action learning model to guide teams in reflection and apply concepts to their AHLP and leadership learning.

Retreat

All participants will be required to attend a three day retreat. The retreat is currently planned as an in-person event in Atlanta, GA. Sessions will feature presentations from community experts, team development based on assessments, leadership learning and reflection, and network building with the entire program cohort.

In the event that travel public health conditions change, the retreat will be held virtually.

Custom Tools

LAPH includes several custom-built tools that teams utilize at different points during the year. These tools use the AHLP as the focus and support teams in applying concepts from webinars and the retreat to their work

Webinars

Leadership learning is also achieved through core and elective webinars and other web-based resources. These webinars are designed in a workshop format, with 1/3 of the time presentation and the rest for direct application of learning, which includes team discussion with speakers and each other. Teams are provided questions and activities to apply the material to their own leadership practice and AHLP. All webinars will be recorded and archived for asynchronous learning.

Network Building and Leadership Learning Network

After the program ends, fellows become part of the Leadership Learning Network (LLN), which is the alumni community of past CHLI program fellows. The LLN receives regular updates via monthly newsletter which features webinars and other health leadership resources as well as updates from the community itself.

LAPH program alumni are encouraged to attend and participate in a variety of events hosted by CHLI. Alumni have the option to participate in several Community of Practice (CoP) meetings throughout the year. These meetings are exclusive to LAPH program alumni and feature an alumni panel or subject matter expert who shares their experience related to a specific topic. CHLI also sponsors a variety of program-related or public events that alumni are often invited to attend.

All participants will have ongoing access to program elements, including tools, resources, and webinars after the end of the program year.

Online Program Portal

All team members will have access to LAPH’s robust online program portal. The portal provides fellows a central access point for program tools and updates as well as leadership articles and resource library. All participants in the program retain access to the portal after their program year has ended.
